Summer Roundup

We had a great summer that even included a trip to China (more to come on that). Meanwhile, here's the highlight reel, in reverse chronological order:

Eri started first grade at Seoul-American Elementary. Her teacher is Mrs. Jackson.

Throughout our time in Asia, I have resisted taking pictures of the English on translated signs and printed on locals' t-shirts because I did not want to seem racist. (In hindsight, I do wish we'd gotten a shot of the sign at one pool that said no one should enter if they have a tattoo that will disgust others. And I'm kicking myself for not getting a pic of a baby wearing a onesie with "MSG" on the front of it.)

Eri and Geoff doing tandem zip line.

At South Korea's version of Pike's Place Market.

Water fun

Leo playing in his undies at a water fountain on a hot day inspired others.

Leo, 3, has become his dad's constant sidekick.

Eri and bff Dylan went back-to-school shopping and left with this matching number and 'best friends' necklaces.

Cruisin'

Horseback riding just outside Seoul.

Uh-oh, looks like we know what happens to the under-performers. #itsnotthegluefactory
Geoff and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary. Our next adventure is always just around the corner! #loveyoulovethislife #stopintroducingmeasyourgirlfriend

Feeding the goats at the petting zoo.

Piglets!
It was hard to get enough of these. Soooo cute. Bacon is still enjoyable though.

Outrunning a hungry sheep.

Eri has no trouble making it up to the top of the rock wall, although I still find it hard to watch her scale it.

My happiness.

Seoul has lots of kids' cafes with indoor play areas. This one is feces themed. Eri is sitting in a toilet paper roll chair; this character has poop on his head and apparently ate corn.
Lookin good, boys.

Flying the drone (but not too close to the border).

About to catch some rays.

Training at the neighborhood pool. Eri has a killer back-stroke ...
... and Leo's diving is a real crowd pleaser.

Girls-only outing for some chocolate chip pancakes!

Eri went to a week-long sewing class and is proudly displaying everything she made. She had a great time, although seeing all the kids at sewing machines did look like a sweatshop. Thank you for the lovely bookmark, Eri!

Faster!

Science is cool (and cute too).
Eri graduated from kindergarten. Excuse me while I go cry in the corner.

Get it!
You go, girl.
This was the winning shot.

Mad dash!

Jeju Island, South Korea

Jeju Island is South Korea's largest island and touted by everyone as the "Hawaii of Korea." Just a quick flight away, we recently spent a long weekend there with a Korean family also from Seoul. Our friends, Ju Young, who is in the South Korean military and works with Geoff, his wife Yu Young and their 4-year-old daughter Su Min, showed us all their favorite spots and made our trip authentic. We loved being toured around by them. Highlights: jet boat ride, digging for clams, kayaking in the bay, hiking to waterfalls and playing on the beach.

Over-packed. Again.
Awe, friends!
Jeju is known for its mountainous, tropical climate; beaches; volcanoes and all-around natural beauty.

And dinosaurs, too.

Sugaring up before a rainy hike.

Speed racin'

We ordered soup and all the seafood was brought to our table alive and dropped into the boiling broth. Our Korean friends kept telling me, "It's not sad, it's fresh." I didn't eat any.
This is a clip of the octopus being submerged. Spoiler alert: I freak out.

The weather was rainy, misty or foggy some of the days, but warm enough that it didn't slow us down.

Digging for clams, but only finding shells.

These statues are iconic of the island. Korean tradition says expectant mothers should travel there to rub the statues' noses in hopes of having a boy. I asked where they should rub if they want a girl and was told nowhere because they only want boys. #effthat
